What if you could create a device, the size of a mini-fridge, that could produce 1000 litres of pure drinking water a day from any source of liquid? Dean Kamen, inventor and engineer, asked himself this question. Fortunately for the world, he was clever enough—and determined enough—to create it.
The Slingshot water vapor distillation system produces enough water for 100 people to cook and bathe. It runs on electricity and meets the pharmacopoeic standard for water injections—that’s the gold standard of water. Karmen expects that, with the help of economies of scale, the Slingshot device can eventually be sold for approximately $2000 per unit.
At the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative, it Coca Cola announced that Latin America and Africa would be among the first to use the slingshot device. The partnership provides Kamen with the reach and visibility that has been his most challenging obstacle. What’s say we give Dean a bit more of our attention?
